Football legend Christian Chukwu buried in Enugu

The late Nigerian football legend and coach, Christian Chukwu, affectionately known as “Chairman,” was laid to rest on Saturday at his country home in Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

 He passed away on April 12 at the age of 74.

A Legacy on and Off the Pitch
Born in Enugu, Chukwu is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest defenders. He was a revered leader and defensive maestro, captaining both the Enugu Rangers and the national team. 

His leadership was instrumental in guiding Nigeria to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980. After his playing career, he continued to serve the game as a coach for the Super Eagles and Enugu Rangers, earning respect for his discipline, humility, and unwavering commitment. 

His remarkable contributions to African football were recognized with the National Honour in 1980 and the prestigious African Football Legend Award in 2012.

Final Farewell
The burial marked the conclusion of nearly ten days of tribute events held in his honor, including a night of tributes in Lagos and Enugu, a colloquium, and other ceremonies. 

Speaking at the event, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah acknowledged Chukwu's enduring impact on Nigerian football.
