Blow for Spurs: Captain Son to Miss Europa League Semi-Final Clash
Tottenham Hotspur will have to face their Europa League semi-final without their star man, Son Heung-min.
Manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed on Thursday that the South Korean forward is still recovering from a foot injury and won’t be fit in time for the first-leg clash against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt.
Son hasn’t played since Spurs drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt on April 10.
Although there were hopes he could return for Thursday’s crucial match, Postecoglou said Son is still training away from the rest of the squad.
“He won’t feature tomorrow night,” said the Spurs boss. “He is improving and hopefully we’ll get him back sooner rather than later.”
Son has had a mixed season, scoring 11 goals in 43 games but none from open play since January.
His absence comes at a time when Tottenham desperately need leadership and spark, especially after a tough 5-1 loss to Liverpool last weekend that handed the Reds the league title.
That defeat marked Spurs’ 19th loss of a disappointing Premier League season.
Now sitting 16th in the table, they are on track for their worst finish since their relegation in 1977. Thankfully, they are safe from the drop this time.
Without their captain, Spurs will have to dig deep and hope for a strong team performance to keep their European dreams alive.
