A farmer in Imobi, Ijebu East Local Government Area, Ogun State, was reportedly trampled to death by a wandering elephant from a government-reserved forest. The incident was confirmed on Tuesday by the Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, who stated that officials were en route to the community.
Hippopotamus Kills Person in Adamawa State
Just a day prior, a hippopotamus displaced by flooding near Kiri Dam in Adamawa State killed one person in Banjiram, Guyuk Local Government Area.
The Chairman of Guyuk LGA, Shalom Kassa, confirmed the attack, explaining that the hippo has been roaming farmlands and residential areas, destroying crops and endangering lives.
Kassa emphasized that flooding has forced the hippos out of their natural habitat and into nearby communities, posing a "serious threat to human lives and means of livelihoods."
He highlighted the locals' inability to act due to laws protecting wildlife species and appealed to the state Ministry of Environment, wildlife officials, and relevant agencies for urgent intervention to prevent further loss of life.
