The deadly bomblast occurred at the popular evening market, which attracts hundreds of local traders and residents.
According to security sources, it was learnt that the assailant disguised as a civilian and mingled with the crowd before detonating the explosive.
“The suicide bomber also died in the blast,” Makama stated.
It has been confirmed by the Borno State Police Command that 12 people died while 18 sustained injuries when a female suicide bomber detonated an explosive in a fish market located in Konduga Local Government Area of the state.
Over 10 people died in a food joint, which locals said it’s located in the fish market area.
“The Nigerian Army troops and emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the scene, and the injured victims were evacuated to a nearby medical facility for treatment.”
The statement reads, “A suicide bomb attack occurred on Friday, 20th June, 2025, at about 2130hrs, at fish market area in Konduga town, Borno State where a female suicide bomber, who had an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) strapped to her body, infiltrated a crowd of unsuspecting civilians and detonated the device, resulting in the unfortunate loss of lives and multiple injuries”
People who witness the scene gave a description of panic and chaos following the explosion, with people we hi were affected lying lifeless and others crying for help as smoke filled the air.
The attack was reported to have occurred at a time when commercial activity was at its peak in the market.
Security personnels have informed local reporters that the area has since been cordoned off by military personnel to prevent further infiltration by other suspected terrorists.
The Borno State Police Command has expressed his condolences, encouraging all who were affected by this and the family of the victims to stay strong.
"The Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and all those affected by this heinous act.
"He also assures the public of the command’s unrelenting effort to ensure normalcy is fully restored in the area.
“The CP urges members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and security conscious, and to promptly report any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest security agency”, he said.
