Jarell Quansah, England defender has been handed a two-match ban by FIFA following his red card in the Three Lions’ Round of 16 victory over Mexico on Thursday.

Quansah was sent off during England’s 3-2 win at the Azteca Stadium after a review upgraded his challenge on Mexico defender Jesús Gallardo to a red card for serious foul play.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee affirmed the Bayer Leverkusen defender will miss England’s quarter-final against Norway and a potential semi-final if Thomas Tuchel’s side progresses.

The suspension comes in spite of reports that the Football Association was considering appealing the automatic ban after FIFA recently suspended the red-card punishment handed to United States forward Folarin Balogun earlier in the tournament.

After a review, Quansah was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Mexico's Jesus Gallardo during England's win in the Azteca, the 23-year-old was found to have breached article 14 of the FIFA code of conduct, which states a player would get a minimum of two game suspension for serious foul play.

Quansah’s absence further compounds England’s defensive problems on the right flank.

The Three Lions had already lost Tino Livramento to injury before the tournament, while Reece James was ruled out after the competition began.

Although primarily a centre-back for Bayer Leverkusen, Quansah had been deployed at right-back against Mexico before his dismissal.
