Polish striker Robert Lewandowski will be aiming for a goalscoring milestone when the White-Reds take on the Super Eagles in a friendly at Stadion PGE Narodowy in Warsaw on Wednesday, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Lewandowski has played 166 games for his country and scored 89 goals. If he scores against Nigeria, he will reach the 90-goal mark, further extending his record as Poland’s all-time leading scorer and moving closer to the 100-goal milestone.
He made his debut for Poland on September 10, 2008.
The 37-year-old is likely to start the encounter after playing just 45 minutes in his side’s last game against Ukraine, which ended in a 2-0 defeat.
Poland coach Jan Urban confirmed he plans to make several changes to his starting XI, revealing that Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara will replace Marcin Bułka between the posts, while Piotr Zieliński is also set to start.
In comments relayed by Fakt, Urban said, “Expect numerous changes. There were many in the first match, and there will be many in the second. These are friendly matches, so when, if not now, should we try different things and give the players a chance?
“We made nine changes during the match against Ukraine. I watched other teams in friendly matches; they made 10 or 11 changes. That’s normal in such matches.”
Wednesday’s clash at the 58,000-capacity Stadion PGE Narodowy will be only the second meeting between the two countries at senior level.
The last time the teams faced off was in March 2018 during their preparations for the FIFA World Cup that year. Nigeria came out on top, beating hosts Poland 1-0 at Stadion Miejski we Wrocławiu, with Victor Moses netting the match’s only goal.
Lewandowski will hope to inspire his side to victory and avoid another defeat on home soil as Poland continue their preparations for future international assignments.
