Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed his frustration and disappointment over the repeated attempts to disrupt the upcoming Local Government elections in the state, scheduled for October 5. He emphatically stated that the elections will proceed as planned.
The governor's remarks came after an incident earlier that day, where individuals dressed in police uniforms tried to take over the office of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. The miscreants attempted to breach the gates and strong room of the commission to steal sensitive electoral materials meant for the conduct of the election.
Addressing the media in front of the RSIEC office in Port Harcourt, Fubara said, "We arrived here this morning after hearing that individuals claiming to be from the Nigeria Police were attempting to take over the premises. I had to come myself to investigate why this was happening."
Fubara further stated, "From what I understand, the DC Operations brought them here to replace the existing police personnel protecting this facility. But let me be clear: we will not tolerate any further interference from this institution. The court judgment did not specify that the election should be cancelled. It only mentioned not providing the voter register. What does that have to do with the election itself?"
The governor's strong stance and commitment to ensuring the elections proceed as scheduled are evident in his statement.
