APGA Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum to Senator Abaribe Over Alleged ADC Links

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South, to clarify his alleged romance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or face sanctions.

In a strongly worded statement released after its caucus meeting in Umuahia on Tuesday night, APGA accused the former Senate Minority Leader of abandoning the party that gave him its platform in 2023 to win a fifth term in the red chamber.

According to the party, Senator Abaribe has been holding meetings allegedly promoting ADC rather than APGA. The statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Chukwuemeka Nwokoro, pointed to town hall meetings held at Abaribe’s NOBIK event centre in Aba on August 18 and September 23, 2025. APGA alleged those meetings tilted towards advancing ADC’s cause.

The party further noted that during a radio programme, the Abia State Secretary of the ADC openly described Abaribe as not just a card-carrying member but also the leader of ADC in the state—an assertion the Senator has not publicly denied.

“Extant laws governing political party membership in Nigeria forbid a person from belonging to two parties at the same time. Thus, Senator Abaribe cannot belong to APGA and ADC simultaneously. His actions amount to a gross violation of APGA’s constitution,” the statement read.

APGA also accused the Senator of “treating its leadership with disdain” after allegedly ignoring invitations to engage with the party on key issues. The party leadership said his conduct, if left unchecked, could bring APGA into “public ridicule and odium.”

As a result, APGA demanded that Senator Abaribe personally and publicly refute or deny his alleged ADC membership through both print and electronic media within 24 hours, warning that disciplinary action would follow if he failed to comply.

In a swift response, Senator Abaribe’s media aide, Uchenna Awom, dismissed the ultimatum as unfair, accusing APGA of acting on rumours rather than facts.

“Senator Abaribe is alive. As APGA leader in Abia, the party has all the channels to access him. They should stop acting on subterfuge. Has he communicated to them that he has left APGA? They don’t just sit down and do arm-twisting to get words from his mouth,” Awom said.

He argued that if the party had genuine concerns, it should reach out directly to the Senator rather than issue public threats.

Political Background

Senator Abaribe, one of Abia’s longest-serving politicians, first entered the Senate in 2007 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and was re-elected in 2011, 2015, and 2019. In 2023, he defected to APGA, under which he secured a fifth term.

Now, with APGA demanding clarity over his political allegiance, the Senator finds himself at the center of fresh controversy, one that could reshape both his future and APGA’s standing in Abia politics.
