Guardiola Threatens to Quit Man City Over Squad Size
Pep Guardiola has made a shocking statement: he says he will leave Manchester City if the club doesn’t reduce the number of players in the squad next season.
The City boss, who signed a new contract until 2027 just last year, says he cannot handle the emotional stress of leaving players out of matchday squads. After their 3-1 win over Bournemouth, Guardiola pointed out that talented players like James McAtee, Savinho, and Rico Lewis were left out and it deeply affected him.
“I told the club, I don’t want that. I don’t want to leave five or six players out of the team every week,” he said. “It’s impossible for my soul. If they cut the squad, I’ll stay. If not, I’ll quit.”
Guardiola says having a large group of 24 to 26 players creates problems when everyone is fit. He believes this hurts the team’s spirit and connection. He even said he would prefer using young players from the academy when needed, rather than managing a crowded squad.
This surprising message came on the same night fans were focusing on what could be Kevin De Bruyne’s final home game for City. Instead, Guardiola’s comments took center stage.
Manchester City is planning a squad rebuild after their FA Cup final loss to Crystal Palace. But now, they’ll have to carefully manage that process or risk losing one of the most successful managers in their history.
City plays their last game of the season against Fulham on Sunday. They currently sit third in the Premier League and are on track to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
