The suspended National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, urging the commission to recognise Mohammed Abdulrahman as the Acting National Chairman of the PDP.

The crisis rocking the main opposition party worsened on Monday when Abdulrahman, accompanied by Anyanwu and a handful of other loyalists, took over the office of the National Chairman, Umar Damagum, as protesters sang songs of solidarity to usher him into the Wadata Plaza, the national secretariat of the PDP.

Anyanwu, alongside the PDP National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and the National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, were last week, suspended for a period of one month by the Damagum-led NWC for alleged anti-party activities.

In a dramatic twist, the Anyanwu-led faction also met in Abuja and announced the suspension of Damagum and the appointment of Abdulrahman, the then National Vice Chairman (North Central) of the party as the Acting National Chairman.

A known friend of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Anyanwu, has successfully fought off moves to ease him out of the PDP NWC, insisting that his ordeal is because of his closeness to the FCT Minister.

In a letter dated November 3, 2025, titled: “Resolutions of the PDP NWC Meeting,” Anyanwu wrote, “After a meeting of the PDP NWC held on November 1, 2025, it was resolved among other issues that Hon Abdulrahman Mohammed, the Vice Chairman North Central, in line with the Constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party, has been appointed as the Acting National Chairman to replace the suspended National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum.

“This appointment is in accordance with the party’s constitution, and we kindly request that all necessary steps be taken to recognise him in his new capacity“We would appreciate your prompt attention and response to this decision.”

The PDP national convention, earlier scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, has been thrown into uncertainty following a ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Although the party was reportedly planning to appeal the judgment before the leadership crisis took a new twist on Monday
