Prominent Indian businessman and polo enthusiast, Sunjay Kapur, has died at 53 after suffering a fatal heart attack caused by a bee sting during a polo match in England.

According to The Mirror, Kapur was stung on the mouth, leading to a severe allergic reaction and cardiac arrest.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 12th of June, sending shockwaves through polo circles in the UK and high society in India.

Experts in the medical field say stings to internal areas like the mouth can be especially dangerous, prompting unexpected inflammation, airway blockage, and drastic blood pressure drops.

Kapur, Chairman of auto parts giant Sona Comstar and ex-husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, was a well-known figure in both social and corporate scenes.

He had studied in the UK and was a familiar face at elite polo events, often sharing the field with members of Britain’s royal family, including Prince William.

Few hours before he passed on, Kapur had posted a message of condolence on X (formerly Twitter) following the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, saying, “Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected.
May they find strength in this difficult hour.”

Tributes came in from far and wide following his sudden death.

Author and actor Suhel Seth wrote: “Deeply saddened at the passing of @sunjaykapur: he passed away earlier today in England. A terrible loss and deepest condolences to his family and to his colleagues.”

Sona Comstar also expressed their pain towards the chairman’s passing: “We are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of our Chairman, Mr Sunjay Kapur. He was a visionary leader whose passion, insight and dedication shaped the identity and success of our company.”
