President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Originally set to retire on August 31, 2025, Adeniyi will now stay in his position until August 2026.
According to a statement from the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the extension is intended to allow Adeniyi to complete major initiatives of the Tinubu administration.
These include:
1. Modernizing the Customs Service
2. Implementing the National Single Window Project
3. Fulfilling Nigeria's obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)
The statement highlighted President Tinubu's confidence in Adeniyi's leadership and his belief that the extension will help the Nigeria Customs Service meet its strategic goals of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
Adeniyi was first appointed in an acting role in June 2023, following the departure of former CG Hameed Ali, and was officially confirmed in October 2023.
