Roger Federer has ruled out a return to professional tennis after confirming that his upcoming appearance at the US Open will only be an exhibition outing.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who retired from the sport in 2022, is set to feature in an exhibition match in New York.
Nevertheless, Federer made it clear that the appearance should not be interpreted as the beginning of a comeback.
Asked if he could return to the professional tour, the 45-year-old Swiss legend gave a firm response: “No, not at all.”
Federer explained that returning to competitive tennis would involve several professional requirements, including entering the anti-doping testing pool. He also pointed to his busy schedule and physical condition as major reasons why a comeback is unrealistic.
He said he is now content with life away from professional competition and enjoys following the sport as a fan.
Federer last competed at the US Open in 2019 before retiring three years later. He remains the only player, male or female, to win five consecutive US Open singles titles, a feat he achieved between 2004 and 2008.
His exhibition appearance comes just days before his induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on the 29th of August in Newport, Rhode Island.
Federer concluded his legendary career with 20 Gram Slam singles titles, Olympic gold and silver medals, and 103 tour-level championships.
