Do snorers hear themselves snore?

If you're been awaken by someone's loud snore, you'll be wondering if the person can't hear the very loud noise especially if the person is sleeping blissfully and soundly.

Can snorers hear themselves snoring? Or do they have the ability to tune out their own loud disturbing sound of snorts and gasps?

Interestingly, both are correct.

Some people wake to the sound of their own snoring," Dr. Anita Shelgikar, a clinical professor of sleep medicine and neurology at the University of Michigan, told Live Science in an email. "Other people are unaware of their snoring, regardless of the intensity or frequency of their snoring."

It depends on the individual, people have different arousal threshold.
It also depends on the sleep phase the snorer has reached, if the snorer has reached the REM(Rapid eye movement) sleep which is the phase where dream occurs, snoring is louder and the person is more likely to hear himself snore.
