Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi has sent a message of support to the Super Eagles, urging them to remain resilient despite Nigeria’s painful exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.
The Eagles crashed out after a tense 1–1 draw over 120 minutes against DR Congo at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, eventually losing 4–3 on penalties, their second consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup.
Reacting to the loss on his X account on Monday, Obi noted the emotional toll of the defeat while praising the team’s commitment. He wrote, “Our dear Super Eagles, I know how deeply yesterday’s outcome weighs on each of you.
“When you wear the green and white, you carry the heartbeat of the whole nation, and I acknowledge the hard work, sacrifice, and commitment you put into every match.”
The former Anambra governor also encouraged the players to focus on the future and not allow the setback to affect them.
According to him, the most important response is to rebuild with focus and discipline.
"What matters now is how we stand, regroup, and rebuild with even greater discipline, focus, and preparedness. I am confident you can rise stronger.”
He said, “But let this moment not break your spirit. Great teams are defined by their response to adversity.Obi also reminded the team that national belief in their abilities remains strong.
He wrote, “Do not let today overshadow the greatness of tomorrow. The Eagle never bows its head; it lifts its wings.
“Keep your heads high and stay committed. Nigeria believes in you, and together, we will soar again. Keep soaring, Super Eagles.”
The loss of the national team has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians, while some blamed the team for their lack of passion on the field, others said they played well, but luck was not on their side on the night of the game.
