Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a decision he communicated in a letter dated July 14, 2025, to the PDP Chairman of his Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

In his resignation letter, Atiku stated that the PDP has "deviated from its foundational principles." He expressed gratitude for the opportunities the party afforded him, including serving two terms as Vice President and being a presidential candidate twice.

However, he cited "irreconcilable differences" that have emerged within the party as the reason for his departure, noting that its current trajectory "diverges from the foundational principles" they once stood for.
Atiku, who was the PDP's presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, has been actively involved in forming a coalition of opposition leaders.

This coalition recently adopted the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
