The Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has condemned the recent bomb explosions in Maiduguri, describing the attack as barbaric and a direct assault on innocent civilians.

The explosions, which occurred around the Monday Market axis and near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, reportedly claimed several lives and left many others injured.

Encmediaone had earlier reported that the blasts detonated at about 7:02 p.m. on Monday, with emergency responders deployed to the scene. The Federal Fire Service confirmed that its personnel were mobilised to assess the situation.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ndume described the incident as “barbaric, inhumane, and a direct assault on innocent citizens,” particularly given that it targeted densely populated areas.

The lawmaker, who is currently in Saudi Arabia performing Umrah, expressed deep sorrow over the attack and extended condolences to the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, families of the victims, and those receiving treatment at UMTH.

“I cannot begin to imagine the pain and burden on our Governor at this moment. This is a deeply heartbreaking situation for him and for all of us. May Allah grant us comfort, strength, and healing,” Ndume said.

He also commended the swift response of security agencies and called for intensified efforts to prevent further attacks.

The senator urged residents across the state to remain vigilant, particularly as the Eid celebrations approach.

“I urge all residents, not only in Maiduguri but across Borno State, particularly in Borno South, to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. We must not let our guard down at this critical time,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has warned of possible deployment of multiple suicide bombers into Maiduguri by suspected Boko Haram elements.

According to the military, the attacks targeted crowded public locations, including the Post Office area, Monday Market axis, and the entrance to UMTH, in what it described as an attempt to inflict mass casualties and spread panic.

The military disclosed that at least 23 persons were killed while over 100 others sustained injuries in the coordinated attacks.

Ndume concluded by praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased, speedy recovery for the injured, and lasting peace in Borno State and Nigeria.
