Dr. Joseph Okoeguale, a renowned expert in viral pathogens, revealed alarming statistics on Lassa fever cases in Edo State. Between December and March 2024, the state recorded 240 positive cases, resulting in 21 deaths. This highlights the severity of the outbreak and the need for prompt action.

Dr. Okoeguale further emphasized the regional impact of Lassa fever, stating that 37.7 million people across 14 West African countries are at risk of infection annually, leading to over 5,000 deaths. This staggering number underscores the significance of addressing this public health concern.

The Director of Viral and Emergent Pathogens, Control and Research, also shed light on the disease's characteristics, noting that only 20% of those infected exhibit symptoms, while 80% remain asymptomatic and do not seek medical attention. This makes prevention and vaccination crucial in combating the spread of Lassa fever.

Dr. Okoeguale, a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist, stressed that Lassa fever affects people of all ages and genders, resulting in mortalities that often go undiagnosed and unchallenged. To combat this, the World Health Organization recommends establishing centers of excellence in affected regions, such as the Lassa Fever Centre at Kenema General Hospital, Sierra Leone, and the Institute of Lassa Fever Research and Control in Irrua.
