The Peoples Democratic Party has expressed confidence in reclaiming majority seats in the National Assembly and winning the presidency in the 2027 general elections, blaming its current minority status on internal disputes, litigations, and defections that trailed the 10th Senate.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, in an interview with the Newsmen also accused lawmakers of the ruling All Progressives Congress of failing in legislative oversight and constituency representation, insisting that Nigerians were yearning for new leadership.
PDP was embroiled in a prolonged leadership crisis, which was eventually resolved on April 30 this year in favour of the National Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu.
Mohammed stated that the PDP NWC, alongside other stakeholders, would pursue every legal means possible to reposition the party for electoral success.
He stated, “We were not having the majority number even at the beginning of the 10th Senate. Subsequently, the disputes, disagreements, court cases, and litigations within the party caused so much dissatisfaction and uncertainty, wherein most of the assembly members defected to various political parties. But now that we are facing another election cycle, we have the confidence that we will bounce back.
“Especially when we look at the caliber of people that have purchased our nomination forms and those who were also screened. And when you look at most of the APC lawmakers, it is not as if they have recorded any significant successes in terms of legislative functions, oversight functions, as well as true representation.
“They have failed to maintain close ties with their constituents. Most of them visit their constituents once in a year. The people are aggrieved. The people are angry. There is so much tension and all that.
“They are yearning for new representation. So, we believe, with the caliber of people we are going to field, we will get the votes. Come 2027, we will, by the grace of God, not only have a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate, but we are also hoping that we will win the seat of the presidency.”
