Tems Makes History as First African Female Owner in MLS
Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, has become the first African female to own a stake in a Major League Soccer (MLS) club.
San Diego FC, a newly established MLS team, announced on Wednesday that the two-time Grammy winner has joined its ownership group.
Born in Lagos, Tems expressed excitement about her new role, highlighting football’s ability to bring people together.
“I am thrilled to join San Diego FC’s ownership group and to be part of a club that celebrates creativity, culture, and community,” she said.
“Football has a unique way of uniting people, and I am excited to help build something special in San Diego, a city known for its diversity and innovation.”
With this move, Tems joins an elite group of investors in San Diego FC, including former Chelsea star Juan Mata, actress Issa Rae, and retired U.S. Navy SEAL Jocko Willink.
San Diego FC, founded in May 2023, is set to make its MLS debut in the 2025 season.
