Premier League to Launch Semi-Automated Offside Technology on April 12


The Premier League is set to introduce semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) on Saturday, April 12, during Match Round 32. This follows extensive non-live testing in the league and successful live implementation in this season’s FA Cup.


The new system enhances the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) by automating key elements of offside decisions. It uses optical player tracking to accurately place virtual offside lines, providing faster, more consistent, and precise decisions. Additionally, SAOT generates 3D graphics, improving the experience for both fans in the stadium and those watching at home.


Developed in collaboration with PGMOL and Genius Sports, the system aims to maintain officiating integrity while increasing efficiency. The first matches using SAOT include:
